What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a bacterial attack on the gums that is the result of hardened plaque and tartar. When not adequately removed, it will accumulate and cause an infection to form, irritating the gum tissue and leading to bleeding and inflammation. If caught in its earliest stage, gingivitis, the symptoms can be reversed; however, if left untreated, it can turn into periodontitis, which can eventually lead to bone and tooth loss as well as increase your risk of other medical concerns throughout the body, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and more.

Scaling & Root Planing

One of the most effective forms of gum disease treatment is scaling and root planing. The first step involves scaling, which is the process of removing plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline as well as teeth. The second step is root planing, which requires smoothing the tooth root so that bacteria cannot easily adhere and cause reinfection. The gum tissues will then begin to reattach to your teeth and heal.

Soft Tissue Laser

When gum disease has progressed to a more serious stage, our dentists can incorporate the use of our soft tissue laser. Emitting no vibration, sound, or heat creates a more comfortable and efficient form of gum disease treatment. It is designed to eliminate bacteria and infected tissues with its highly concentrated beam of light that carefully moves across the gumline without negatively impacting healthy gum tissue.

Antibiotic Therapy

To reach bacteria deep within gum pockets, we can apply antibiotic therapy. Using Arestin, which is a powdery substance, we will apply it to the gums so that it hardens. Within two weeks, the antibiotic will slowly disperse so that its tiny microspheres that are filled with anti-microbial agents will target and kill bacteria.
