Prevention is an essential component of healthy smiles. Your family dentists at Elmbrook Family Dental, Dr. Brunner, Dr. Taibl, Dr. Tack, and Dr. McGinn, offer a comprehensive menu of preventive services for patients of all ages. We recommend that all of our patients -- from age 5 to 105 -- visit us at least twice each year for a thorough exam and professional cleaning. During this visit, we will evaluate your need for other services. Keep reading to learn about the preventive treatments that you can count on at Elmbrook Family Dental!
Checkups and Cleanings for All Ages
During a routine checkup and cleaning, our team will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and around the gum line. Plaque is the clear substance that is constantly forming in your mouth. When it’s not thoroughly removed through daily brushing and flossing, plaque turns into stubborn tartar -- the hard, yellow substance which can only be removed by your dental hygienist.
As we clean, your hygienist will also check for the presence of and measure any periodontal pockets, or spaces between your teeth and gums that indicate gum disease. Once these pockets reach a certain depth, we will need to schedule gum disease therapy (see below).
During the routine exam, your dentist will check for the presence of dental issues that require restorative treatment. Our Spectra camera detects cavities sooner than is possible with regular X-rays or the naked eye. We may also recommend an oral cancer screening.
Gum Disease Therapy Refreshes Smiles
Your periodontal (gum) health is a crucial for your overall wellbeing. The gums provide easy access to the blood stream, and bacteria from an infection here can quickly spread throughout the body. Gum disease has been linked to a number of health issues, including heart disease, uncontrolled blood glucose levels, pregnancy complications, and others.
The Elmbrook Family Dental team provides nonsurgical periodontal therapy in the form of scaling and root planing. Using special tools, we remove plaque and tartar buildup from above and around the gum line. We also plane the tooth’s root, or smooth its surface to prevent reinfection. Scaling and root planing may be carried out over the course of several appointments to our office, and is often combined with antibiotic therapy for complete healing.
TMJ Therapy & Headache Relief
Your TMJ (temporomandibular joint) is a connection of bones, nerves, and ligaments at the base of your jaw and below your ear. When something is off with its alignment, nighttime teeth grinding and jaw clenching are likely to occur. You may experience a clicking, popping, and aching jaw, chronic headaches, and a number of other painful symptoms of TMJ. To help, your dentist offers TMJ therapy with the NTI-tss appliance. It’s a comfortable, effective, nonsurgical solution that works by keeping your jaw from activating at night to stop teeth grinding and jaw clenching.
